GPS Tracking for Cars – Police depts. often have CAD and AVL. Have you heard of drug dealers using this tech to track police cars?
CAD = Computer Aided Dispatch. AVL = Automatic Vehicle Locator (its GPS based)
Best Answer: No. It also wouldn’t be possible. The CAD system is a closed internal system without outside access and AVL is transmitted via a secure link to teh CAD. The better chance would be if someone were to use a radio scanner and listen for where the units had been dispatched to, etc.
- I was attatched to a police department for six months conducting a study on why their drug related arrests were down a significant percent over the previous year’s numbers. After months of observing officers in their cars, we eventually found (by pure chance) that during shift changes these young kids would sit in the park across the street and would cell-phone dealers with information on who was working that night, how many cars were out, etc. (We turned a kid who was arrested at school with a significant amount of pot.) The dealers would shift where they were dealing based on who was working, because they had… get this…. run an analysis on where the officers were most apt to patrol by following them for over a month and mapping out where they would go. I kid you not.
Who ever said the criminal element was dumb was horribly wrong.
