GPS Tracking for Cars – A vehicle-miles-traveled tax?

December 30th, 2009 No comments

which would mean equipping cars and trucks with a device that uses GPS technology to track the number of miles driven and compute the tax owed. The amount could be adjusted to charge more for travel during peak traffic hours.
Commission members said the transition to a national system would take about 10 years.

Have we lost our minds? Have I died and gone to Orwillianville?

And the thing is I cannot even believe that in America this is actually being suggested on a national platform more or less a state one.

As a single mother with 3 kids who lives pay check to pay check the thought of having to worry about getting my kids to school, me to work, and then of coarse going to the park, the dance classes etc… they go to and pay extra because I am trying to enrich my kids lives and give them something besides a life sitting in front of the TV, is just repulsive.

  • Don’t worry they were going to try it in Massachusetts but the people said the same thing and if it won’t pass in Massachusetts I don’t think it will pass anywhere else… Besides what about the farmers that drive on dirt roads that they create themselves… would they have to pay a tax for roads they already pay for directly?
  • I agree – you have said it all. The Democrats want more control on each individual and want more of their hands in our pockets.

It is just another way for big brother to keep track of the little guy.

It is repulsive to think they are sitting up their in DC thinking they even have the right to do such a thing.

  • Obama only shot it down because it wasn’t cost effective. Why spend the money to Lojack all the cars to tax mileage if you can just check the odometer when you renew the registration each year. Same kind of thing, but it costs him less to do it.
  • I love seeing you guys get all scared over crap like this, it’s funny as all get out! It’s like turning the lights off in the library just for the hell of it. LMAO!

Booooo wahtch out the boogie man’s gonna put rooster blood on your forehead and steal your spirit!! Booooooo!

  • If that ever happened, it would be like the hotel on boardwalk. saying, “you owe me this much more because i’m letting you stay here!” and you’re supposed to assume that it’s worth it.
  • Yeah, if it passes and you drive 15,000 miles a year, your tax would be in the neighborhood of $37.50. I can certainly see how that would break your bank.
  • I will be out of a job because I drive about 2000 miles a month going to my customers to work on their equipment. It is just a way to control what we do! Welcome to Socialism!
  • I don’t think it will happen…but I do believe it is his redistribution of wealth agenda…
  • The article says Obama shot the idea down.
  • obama said no to it. relax.
  • W-O-W that is ridiculous!! Id ride my frickin horse.

    lol =]

GPS Tracking for Cars – How do you solve a real life “maths” petrol dilemma – Help needed?

December 19th, 2009 No comments

I have a real life maths problem scenario but I need a maths expert to help me as I cannot get my head around the conceptual maths part of it.

I get reimbursed business miles I do every month – the monthly total business miles figure is generated via a GPS tracking system that records daily business miles and reimburses monthly at a PENCE PER MILE (PPM) rate of about 14 pence. The PPM rate changes monthly, slightly up or down depending on the constant changing fuel price in the UK.

This figure is calculated by the Business as follows:-

(Total Fuel Purchase / Total Gallons) / MPG (i.e. expected to get 35mpg) = PPM

Example;-

Total Fuel Purchase = £563.76 Total Gallons = 115 thus MPG = 35mpg

563.76 / 115 = 4.90

4.90 / 35 = 0.14ppm

(I do not suspect that knowing how this is derived is relevant to the question I will pose shortly apart from the fact that we are expected to achieve 35 miles per gallon on the vehicle and if we under achieve on this target we pay for it ourselves somehow and if we over achieve they give a credit for this somehow).

For NON business miles that is tracked via the GPS tracking I am NOT reimbursed this PPM rate so if I use the vehicle privately, I similarly pay a 14 PPM rate out of my pocket although no “credit” at 14 PPM is given for non business miles.

Therefore, I get a “credit” for all business miles only monthly at this 14 pence (PPM) rate but the business also give me a BP Fuel Card (relevant to this query as BP is by far, not the cheapest fuel to purchase in the UK) which they charge against the “credit” they have given me for business miles (i.e. Credit given for business miles and then the BP Fuel Card Monthly Bill charged against this credit)

So in an example they may give me £300 credit for business miles but my total fuel card bill may be £350, therefore I am in DEFICIT or I could be in SURPLUS if my total fuel card bill came to £280.

My main and important query is – Does it make a difference if I actively seek to buy the cheapest fuel? Does this benefit me or the business? If so, can you please explain how this benefits me i.e. does it make any difference to me financially to seek the cheapest fuel which I have been doing as a general principle in the expectation that I AM PERSONALLY BENEFITING financially by doing so.

This has lead to heated debates between colleagues and friends where some have argued it is in my financial benefit to seek cheap fuel whereas others have said it makes no difference at all and that I should fill up anywhere?

My secondary query which is not as important as the first – The business works STRICTLY on a monthly basis for fuel calculations but obviously no one can be exactly sure of how much fuel is in the car at a month’s end?

Some argue that I should aim to run the tank down at month end not to end up in a bad “deficit” position, and, or, not to fuel up at all on the last day of the month as this will ‘create’ a deficit. Is there logic in this as any deficit at a month’s end would be a credit in the new month following, wouldn’t it so you maybe worse off at one month but be in a recovered position the next?
Please help as this has been bewildering me for quite some time, especially whether it is in my own financial interest to continue finding the cheapest fuel or whether I have been and will be wasting time by doing so.

Best Answer: Having administered a very similar scheme I can assure you that filling the tank at the month end makes no difference over a period of time, swings and roundabouts, you gain one month and lose the next.

As regards the cost per gallon usually the card issuer advises the average cost of fuel both per vehicle and across all vehicles in the fleet so, normally to keep things simple the average across the fleet is used to avoid dozens or hundreds of individual calculations. By you shopping round the difference made will be insignificant.

A better approach is to try and improve your personal MPG figure this will give you a “profit of 14p for each extra mile covered per gallon which if you cover many miles could be significant.

  • something similar happened to me last year when the fuel prices were really hotting up. The company accountant sent out an email asking wherever possible could company car users fill up at a supermarket as they tend to be a penny or two cheaper and would bring a good saving to the comapny.

The two main oppositions to this were that:

1, you have to go out of your way to find a supermarket ( they dont usually build them on motorways ) so any cost saving was offset by the amount of fuel spent to and from these petrol stations.

2, ( from a colleague, so you’ll have to find out yourself how true this is )
the petrol supplied from “cheaper ” outlets is somehow diluted slightly or has different additives and as such you dont get such good mileage from it.
Colleague seemed to think as much as 30 miles less on a tankful of cheap stuff.

He quoted some kind of study as his basis for saying this, so i am not in a position to disbelieve him.

Sentiment being that, it really doesn’t make any significant difference to you, so why not just fill up when you need to, wherever its convenient for you.

If you try to fill up on particular days as your work mates say, then sure, you will see a difference on a monthly basis. But compare yourself to someone who isn’t bothered about it over the period of 12 months, my bet is you’ll see no difference

GPS Tracking for Cars – Stolen GPS! Can we track it?

November 14th, 2009 No comments

Okay….. early this morning my grandmother realized that her Garmin Nuvi GPS was stolen out of her car along with some petty change.
Is there anyway to track the GPS down?
Do we file a police report?
Do we get a new one and pretend it never happened ?

Thanks CSteinbrook☺

Best Answer: No you can not track it. You can file a police report on the off chance that they recover it but you would need the serial number to make that work.

  • If you registered the GPS online when you bought it, the serial number will be on Garmin’s website. probably no chance in hell are you getting it back but I would file a police report for sure.

This is one reason I like to keep my garmin in my pocket and not leave it in the car.

GPS Tracking for Cars – GPS tracked my boyfriend somewhere he says he wasnt?

November 2nd, 2009 No comments

So, I have gps tracking on my boyfriends phone. He started to give me different stories about where and what he was doing on his birthday weekend..but couldnt pin point exactly where he was going. he hinted a few times during the week before this happened that he may be so drunk that he wont be able to drive home. This is when I said, If that’s the case then I will come pick you up when u are ready to come home..I also mentioned that a man of his age should be past getting so drunk that he could nt get home after a night of hanging out…this dudes almost 40. After these conversations he then decided that he wasnt going to go anywhere..that he was going to stay in the house. So, after telling me that he was going to stay in he decides before I get in the house to write me a note explaining that he was going to spend time with his family a good 30 minutes from where we live..he said, Ima go hang out with my fams, they want to take me out for my bday i will be in around 2pm or so..i love you.

When I found this note I called his phone a couple time..no answer…I tried over and over no answer. I knew in my gut that this stories all week were off so I checked the gps on the at & t phone plan that we have and the gps tracked him 10 minutes from where we live…ALL NIGHT LONG..i checked every hour on the hour. Now, I know u are asking, did u go out and try to find him..yes I did but the gps only pinpoints a phicinity never an accurate spot but i checked when i got in and all night long it said the same thing..same location he was not where he said he would be. Which leads me to believe that he was probably out recieving a birthday screw from someone else.. (do i sound crazy? C’mon..so, he rolled in the next morning with some excuse about how he left the phone in the car.

I asked him if he enjoyed himself and he said yes, I asked him if he drove his car to the place he told me he was going and he said yes..so i told him, it’s funny because my gps tracked u not too far from here…so, where were u? of course, he lied and said he was exactly where he told me he was..and that at & t are wrong…that they are not always correct.

So, I already know the deal with this dude i thought that i would humor you all on yahoo answers..Here’s my question..How accurate do you think the phone gps is…

Guess it’s time to kick him to the curb..and guess what, he will not budge with his story..he will not budge. The GpS company is just wrong according to him…

Thanks for listening.

By the way,.,,you may ask, why do you have a gps on your dudes phone..its’ because he has been suspect for a while now. You might also want to know that we are engaged to be married, we just started a biz together and all pretty much was going well..oh well!!!

Best Answer: He’s a liar. Call of the engagement. You’re story doesn’t sound like you’re shocked at all. You know what’s going on and you’re sure of it. The only thing left I’m sure is for you to be upset when you find actual proof. Don’t wait for that. You know what’s going on and from your story, I know what’s going on. He’s cheating. You know what needs to be done.

  • If you don’t trust him, break up with him.

He doesn’t deserve a woman that doesnt trust him.
ANd you don’t deserve a guy that you can’t trust.

  • he`s not even worth it.
leave that sorry excuse for a man.
you can do better and you know it sweetheart !

    p.s.,
    answer miness ?

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?…

  • Amazing…

You don’t trust him and you are planning a life together? Good luck, because this will never work.

  • Some people are very good liars. Your bf sounds like one of them. Unfortunately for him, technology is just too good. Good luck in the future.
  • Do you honestly either not trust him or are that obbsessed with him that you have to gps his location?! Honestly what kind of relationship is that?…
  • you know what to do. good luck and GOD bless you.
  • Quick answer: GPS tracking equals STALKING! You don’t trust him and you are a control freak.
  • i think the gps is right and if he goes there again than he might be cheating and might be using you…
  • I’m not sure how accurate, but why would it suddently be wrong.
  • every man lies, just let it go and wait to see if it happens again.

    but oh yeah he lied.

  • Whats ur Question o_o?
  • ur a saddoo/get a life
  • Wow, what a loser. The GPS thing has to be at least somewhat accurate; it wouldn’t be 20 minutes off.

Didn’t he say he would be back at 2pm, yet he stayed out all night? What’s up with that?

  • too long lost interest after the note part

i think ur question is about if u should tell him that u caught him and you don’t trust him anymore?

if that is the question, than if u don’t trust him, then don’t be with him….. duh

oh, and p.s. don’t be so stalkerish with ur next boyfiend

  • Man idk what the hell i did. GPS on a dude? What you CIA or sum….that aint cool at all. I aint need nobody on me like that. No one….that is some fatal attraction type ish…even if you were married and owned Pepsi….GPS? there’s no trust there so dont know why you even in business together in the first place.

Anyways besides my personal views; its pretty simple. Take the phone….go where he says he was and see what the GPS says then. 10-30mins is pretty close to each other depending on the direction. Its like Google Maps…if you zoom out real far the dot will cover the whole of NY and some of NJ so someone can say i was in NJ but the dot covers mainly NY you know. So i mean if the place he says he was like on one side of town and where the dot or w.e is is completely on the other side then he has no point. Best bet is to take the phone and check what the GPS says with what you had before. Easiest way to catch him but damn….GPS on ya man. Doesnt it seem abit invasive of his privacy to begin with? I mean he prob went out with friends 2 a strip club and lied about that…doesnt necessarily mean he cheated but test it yourself and see what gives. Dont take his BS excuse though, that kind of technology is not accurate only because of security reasons but they can be if they wanted to. Still GPS tracking your lover, gotta leave ma phone at home more often then

  • He’s definitely cheating, move on, i know its hard sometimes even if you know he’s cheating but try testing the GPS like tell him to go to a gas station because youre craving like idk something, and track it. he said he went somewhere with his family, ask him or the family where te went just bring it up in casual conversation. and the place the gps tracked him to that was like 10min away, try and find out where that is exactly, hope i helped
  • Um, NO, things are not going pretty well. Are you fooling yourself and are just happy being miserable? What kind of a life is it you are so willing to lead with someone who can not even tell you where they are on their birthday. Sweeite – this is “suspect” and he has been “suspect” for awhile. How needs it? Are you so desperate to have drama in your life that you would spend each and every day of your life feeling rejected, lied to, cheated on – all of which effects your self esteem? You do not live in a 3rd world nation where you are in an arranged marriage right? Are you free? Are you adult? Are you over 18? Are you normal? If you answer yes, then you just got your answer to your question – Dump him!
  • the SECOND you told me that you tracked me using a GPS device, ALL
of your bags would be packed, the engagement would be off, and you would find yourself on the curb. Hopefully that’s what your boyfriend does.
  • Why would you want to be with someone if you feel like you have to have satelites tracking everywhere he goes? Like seriously? Your not married, why would you want to be? Kick him to the curb and stop wasting your time. Next in line is giong to be a chastity belt
  • You already don’t trust him…why are you still with him?

If he finds out that you tracked him, he’s going to be outraged. He just wanted to have some fun on his birthday, geeze why couldnt you give him a birthday pass?

    I seriously think you’re a stalker.

GPS Tracking for Cars – If a car has GPS on it?

November 1st, 2009 No comments

and say the car/person were missing, how long would it takes people to track the car down? I am writing a story and need to be clear on this as far as time.

Best Answer: I think you are confusing GPS – essentially just a receiver, much like your radio – verses an On Star system which is both a receiver and a transmitter. It’s the transmitted signal that can be tract very quickly – often in just a minute or two.

if your vehicle is stolen, LoJack helps get it back — fast. A LoJack transmitter hidden in your vehicle helps the police track and recover it, often within a few hours.

  • it can be tracted in 10 minutes or less……….normaly 5 minutes, same thing with a cell phone,,,,,,,
